“Onym is a library. A truly public one. It is a free online database comprising the collections of private libraries in the city of Cologne. By making accessible what used to be exclusive, and by assembling what used to be diffuse, Onym aims to reassert the notion of what a library as an institutional embodiment of the social distribution of knowledge can be. The task we assign to Onym does thus not consist in merely increasing the quantity of books accessible in a given city, but above all in enhancing the quality of the social relations that are linked to their exchange. The title Onym aims to describe what distinguishes our proposal from more traditional forms of libraries: instead of reproducing the impersonal structure inherent to these institutions, Onym is all about the individuals constituting them. Deriving from the Greek ‚onyma‘, meaning ‚name‘, the title of the project figures as a neologism for a direct opposite to something an-onymous, not having a name.”
